melodrama

The Melodramatic Acting                                      Style
  • Remember in Victorian Melodrama, all emotion is externalised. There is no such thing as inner psychological depth!
Generally this means “Over the Topin every way. Here are some techniques which help create this affect.
  • Slower clearer delivery of lines with huge projection. Remember Victorian Theatres were huge and there were no microphones.
  • Play everything to the audience, even if you are supposed to be talking to another character on stage! Indicate whom you are talking to by looking sideways at them and holding your hand out towards
  • Address the audience directly whenever the script will allow you to do so.
  • •
  • The Pose: Invent poses of shock, horror, love, evil, intent, cruelty, desire, dilemma, forgiveness, begging forgiveness etc. A pose should last at least three seconds and should be clearly visible from fifty metres.
  • The working yourself up to the pose: lasts two to three seconds --let's see you getting there!
  • •
  • The Gasp - very loud expressing a range of emotions. Often accompanied by a pose.
  • The Swoon - often preceded by lines such as "Alas! I can hardly bear it." The swoon should be graceful and provision should be made for someone to catch you.
  • The long walk downstage/upstage/across stage when hatching a plan or in a dilemma
  • The Pacing- to and fro across the stage when hatching a plan or in a dilemma. Move before you speak so that the audience can track who is speaking
  • The Tableau (freeze frame)- the still picture made up of a number of characters to freeze the moment, eg: The Happy Ending/ The Secret Lovers. The tableaux should be very explicit
  • The Sigh/The Groan/The Tubercular Cough
  • First Entrances are important - may even bow, this is related to the cult of “The Actorthe Star system

30 - 35 second film

In hurumanu two for the past couple of weeks we have been planning on making a 30 to 35 second long film, at the moment we have just been working on our plan and our setup like the characters the location and the theme. Now we have finished planning our storyboard and we are onto filming now so what is going to happen is i am an innocent person playing on the playground when a stranger comes along and starts pushing & throwing me around then he will throw me off the top of the playground and i will start running he will then chase me through the lane way all the way to the field then suddenly as he is chasing me i look back and he is still chasing me then i look forward and look back again and he is gone, i then go back to take a look to see what happened while im confused i then find a shoe on the ground which i though belonged to the guy chasing me then all of a sudden as i am investigating the shoe i get pulled into the bush by a paedophile aka Tyler and he will kill me and that will be the end, there also must be not talking in our films and no subtitles either.

Melodrama

Theme - Victorian melodrama

Drama during the Victorian age: in the 19th century in England a new theatrical genre developed, the melodrama.

In the 19th century in England a new theatrical genre developed: the melodrama, that was an extremely simple and short play with superficial and stereotypical characters and in which good always won over evil. In this period also developed the music hall, that was a variety entertainment with songs, jokes, acrobats and belly dancers.

This theatrical genre used taboo subjects such as sex through the employment of double meaning and it tendered towards slapstick (comicitagrossalana). The people usually went to the theatre to enjoy something carefree, exciting and funny.  Much space was given to music and and sound effects in order to create emotion and sensations, while the characters were stiff and flat. Were built small theatres, that presented modern innovations like gas lighting, which replaced candles and sophisticated machinery, like the ''box-set''. Oscar Wilde was certainly the most outstanding representative of the poetry of the aesthetic movement, but he is better known for his activity as a playwright. he gave fantasy, vivacity and a breathe of a new life to drama. His comedies, full of humour, intrigued and fascinated the audience.

What is the Victorian age? Victorian era, in British history,  the period between approximately 1820 - 1914, corresponding roughly but not exactly to the period of queen Victoria's reign (1837 - 1901) characterised by a class- based society, a growing number of people able to vote, a growing state and economy, and Britain's statues as the most.

Digital tech

For the past three weeks of digital tech i have been learning about coding and ergonomic info graphics, robots etc, so we have pretty much been learning how to get used to the technology and how to use it. I have been testing and making games with coding and also learning about ergonomic info graphics and i will admit, it wasn't too bad because i got to play games and learn how to function them there were sometimes ten or more stages to go through throughout the course and what the courses were was just teaching some simple steps to coding for beginners like me of course. completed about two games and i got two certificates one was for learning how to code minecraft and the other was flappy bird. So now switching over to info graphics. Info graphics is pretty much like a set of instructions or a chart of something for accuracy but im not to sure so its like a chair for e.g. a chair is bit on a 90 degree angle so that we would be sitting on it flat on not on a curve or like how the chair is made of plastic etc and not made of nails so yeah thats pretty much what ergonomic info graphics.

Digestive system

        Digestive system

D.L.O. To learn the components of the digestive system.

What is the small intestine and its function? The small intestine also known as the small bowel is an organ in the gastrointestinal tract where most of the already processed nutrients and minerals from food takes place. It lies Between the stomach and the large intestine, and receives bile and pancreatic juice through the pancreatic duct to aid in digestion. The small intestine is the part of the intestines where upto 90% of the digestion and absorption of food occurs, the other 10% taking place in the stomach and large intestine. The main job of the small intestine is to absorb nutrients and minerals from food.

What is the large intestine and its function? The purpose of the large intestine is to engross water and salts from the minerals that have not yet been processed as food, and get rid of any  waste products or left overs. By the time food mixed digestive juices reaches your large intestine, most digestion and absorption has already taken place.

What is the function of the colon? The colon is a part of the large intestine, the final part of the digestive system. Its function is to reprocess fluids and to absorb waste products from the body and prepare for its elimination. The colon is made up of four parts: descending colon, ascending colon, transverse colon, and sigmoid colon.

What is the function of the rectum? The rectum is the final part of the large intestine that connects the colon to the anus. It stores fecal matter produced in the colon until the body is prepared to discard the waste through the process of defecation.

What is the function of the anus? The anus is the end of the gastrointestinal [GI] tract. When the rectum is full, your body feels the urge to have a bowel movement. The internal anal spincher relaxes and pushes  the stool from the rectum into the anal canal.

Workshop 2

Brainstorm -

What is happening in this shot -
Other Wybie standing on stairs outside the house. 'Other mother' asks him to smile from the doorway, instead, he frowns. Other Wybie making self smaller-less of a target-head down, shoulders hunched. It looks weak and vulnerable.

Angles/Shots - High angle - makes Wybie look overpowered, weak and vulnerable,
POV - 'Other mother', makes her seem stronger, bigger, more dominant.

Viewer - Makes viewers feel sorry for/ scared for other Wybie.

Why did the director do this -

Foreshadowing hinting at what is to come.
hinting that maybe the other mother isn't so wonderful.

Other Techniques - lighting - spotlight on Wybie - like he's on the spot/ under focus - dark around creates a creepy atmosphere.

In the scene with the other mother and the other Wybie we see high angle shots used to show the theme 'looks can be deceiving'. We see this when the other mother asks the other Wybie to smile but he hunches over and frowns instead. This makes the audience feel sorry for the other Wybie because he looks scared. The use of a high angle shot from the other mother's point of view adds to this feeling as it makes the Other Wybie look weak and vulnerable. Why did the director do this to foreshadow the change of the other mother from creepy to more creepy. Coinciding with this is the use of lighting. A spotlight is on the other Wybie emphasizing that he is under the focus of the Other Mother. This reminds us of early in the film where a low angle shot was used to make Wybie seem big and scary but he really he was just ordinary this links us to the scene because it also shows looks can be deceiving.

Workshop 1

Theme & Idea - Continuous idea/subject that links throughout the text.

Looks can deceiving - don't judge a book by its cover
                                    don't judge by appearance

Example 1 - character of Wybie - When we first meet him he seems scary ( mask, motor bike,
High angle used to look, bigger, loud music) but in reality hes just a weird neighbour.

Shows theme because like other characters, our first impressions are based on appearance, tone, visual techniques aren't always correct.

Important because it helps audience understand with Coraline that just because things look good doesn't mean it is she should choose the real world over the other world.

Example 2 - Character the Other mother' - she seems normal/friendly at the start but by the end she becomes a soul devouring spider demon                               .

Shows theme because other mother isn't watching what she appears to be at the start so we shouldn't judge by first impressions.

Important because Coraline realises that having something that looks perfect isn't always a good thing.

Statement In coraline, the theme 'looks can be deceiving' it's used effectively to engage the audience

Evidence For instance, the character of the 'Other mother' shows us that looks can be deceiving because she starts off as a kind mother figure but gradually changes into a soul devouring demon

eXplanation - audience - This makes us understand that we shouldn't judge a character based on first impression as they can often be wrong.

eXplanation - Director - This is done to help Coraline decide between the real world and the other world. If the Other mother was really perfect Coraline wouldn't choose to go home.

eXplanation - another technique(shots/angles,music,setting,lighting/colour) - The other mother 'first appears in a vibrantly bright room that makes us feel warm and safe. however, by the end it has became dark and green  which makes the viewer feel scared and shows that her first look deceiving.

Your link - This can be juxtaposed to the character of Wybie who he thinks at first is evil but is actually kind, proving looks can be deceiving

Cup stacking

Today in P.E class i was learning how to cup stack a three by six so what i did to learn how to stack and unstack more efficiently was i watched a video where it shows a tutorial on how to properly cup stack  a three by six so from what i learnt is that when your unstacking in order to stack it back up faster you can hold two cups in one hand instead of just holding one in each hand so for me that was a big help because i actually found it to be quite efficient because i got it back up a lot faster than i did before but i had to try and get used to holding two cups

Camera shots

In my Hurumanu 2 class we have been studying a verity of different types of camera shots we had to study over 10 different camera shots some of the camera shots we studied was the high angle shot where the camera is positioned opposite from the sky so it would be looking straight into the face of the subject we also done the low angle shot, close up,extreme close up, medium close up, and etc. So what we had to do was we had to had to study the camera shots but we also had to go outside          and take photos for each of the angles and match them to the right camera angles.

What am i learning - I am learning different types of camera angles.
How does this work show my learning - by me being able to describe what the definition of the angles.
What am i wondering as a result of this learning

NZ Government compare and contrast paragraph

In the power to people Hurumanu, we learnt about the Maori authority system and the British settler Government system. This compare and contrast paragraph is about those two systems. People were responsible for their whanau. Tapu was important for protecting people, objects and land. Whereas law was organised to control society and to stop people from breaking the rules of society. They were set punishments for breaking the law. This matters because it is important to know how NZ was before the treaty and how different the Maoris were from the Europeans.

Investigating light.

What is the fastest way to travel through the universe.
What is light speed.
Define optical science.
What is fibre optics.
Name three objects that help us see very small objects or objects far away.

1: Search Result launched  by NASA in 2006, it shot directly to a solar system escape velocity. This consisted of an Earth-relative launch of 16.26 kilometres a second (that's about 36,000 miles per hour), plus a velocity component from Earth's orbital motion (which is 30 km/s tangential to the orbital path)

2: 299 792 458 m / s

3: Optics is the branch of physics that studies the behaviour and properties of light, including its interactions with matter and the construction of instruments that use or detect it. Optics usually describes the behaviour of visible, ultraviolet, and infrared light.

4: An optical fibre is a flexible, transparent fibre made by drawing glass or plastic to a diameter slightly thicker than that of a human hair.

400m
1m 21s
1500m
6m 42s
So today in P.E. class we were practising how to do the Fosbury flop in high jump so what we learnt was that you had to run up to the mat diagonally and you had to turn around when u get to the mat and lift up one foot and hop over it and land on the mat with your legs and arms facing the ceiling with your chin tucked in. Today we done shot put and we were learning the technique on how to throw the shot put properly.

High jump1 Meter1 Meter 10cm
Long jump3 Meter 40cm2 Meter 80cm

1: Run up is 21 steps.
2: Take off will be from the second marker.
3: Land will be measured from the back foot.
4: Land with both feet together.
5: If you are over the second marker when you jump it is a fowl jump.
