What is a spiritual?A Spiritual is a type of religious song. They were used to uplift slaves, give them hope, church, birthdays, funerals etc. 

Who was Harriet Tubman? Harriet Tubman was an american politic activist. Born into slavery Tubman escaped and subsequently made some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, including family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the underground railway

Write about a spiritual you chose and highlight some lyrics and the hidden messages behind them. Tubman used “Wade in the Water” to tell slaves to get into the water to avoid being seen and make it through. This is an example of a map song, where directions are coded into the lyrics.
