Population of Maori and European throughout 1836 - 1901

In the image displayed above it is showing a timeline of the propulation of Maori and European back from 1836 through to 1901. From around 1830 through to the 1840s, the Maori population had dominated the Europeans, but that would soon change after the occurance of the musket wars. The musket wars had greatly affected the Maori population after it had resulted in the deaths of an estimated 20,000 people. But, this was not the only reason the Europeans had outnumbered the Maori. It was also because the number of Sailors coming into NZ had largley increased.

In 1830 there were around 100,000 Maori and 200 Europeans. 

Paragraph One (Lawyer)

One reason that a treaty was needed was the lawless behaviour of some of the British Settlers like whalers.This matters because of the lawless behaviour of the sailors. The first thing the sailors would do once they would arrive at shore would be to go straight to the pub and get wasted. Then they would get into fights, which would cause problems with the residents because they would disturb the peace within Kororareka.

Another reason that a treaty was needed was to protect Māori rights. One group that felt strongly about this was the missionaries.The missionaries were worried about many things and believed that a treaty was needed in order to create peace and better rights for Maori. These rights were going to help prevent the theft of their land and to reduce the amount of the deaths occurring during the musket wars.

Another reason that a treaty was needed was the Musket Wars. The Musket wars had originally begun because of conflict between the northern iwi ngapuhi and Ngati Whatua. Because of this, it had resulted in the deaths of an estimated 20,000 Maori. This was a massive downfall for Maori and something was needed to be done to stop all the madness.

In conclusion, a treaty was needed because

Climate Change

 What is the greenhouse effect? When solar radiation passes through the atmosphere, some of it is reflected by the atmosphere and the earths surface. Some of the radiation that is reflected to earth may get trapped because of greenhouse gases restricting it from leaving earth. This causes the earth to heat up

What are three bad things/consequences of climate change? Water levels will rise, an increase in hot temperature

Possible solution? Walk/bike to places, use 

What is the paris agreement? It is a international treaty on climate change.

Eclipses

 How does it happen? Solar eclipse: When the moon blocks out the sunlight during the day causing total darkness. Lunar eclipse: When the earth blocks the sunlight from the moon.

What would we see? We would see darkness during the day for the solar eclipse and no moon for the lunar exlipse.

When was the last one seen in NZ? 1965 

When is the next one? Solar eclipse: Satuday 07/22/2028. Lunar 8 - 9 Nov 2022

Volcanoes in New Zealand

Pick a volcano - White Island


Where is it? It is located 48km from the east coast of the North island of New Zealand, in the bay of Plenty


What's special about it? It has been built up by continuos volcanic activity over the past 150,000 years.


When did it last erupt? What was the damage? 9 Dec 2019: Eighteen people were killed and a further 26 were seriously injured, many crucially. It also sent a plume of ash and gas more than 3.5km into the air.


What are the local stories/ myths with this volcano? The volcanoes Ngauruhoe, Tongariro and White Island are present in a Maori legend. A medicine man named Ngatoro was climbing up Tongariro with a woman named Auruhoe. He told his followers not to eat while he was gone in order to give him strength on top of the cold mountain.

Passion Project

For PP we're going to be creating bags for men. My group contains of 3 people, one being me and the other two my mates, William & Tyler. We started out by created our planning structure on a sheet of paper. We then tried using a vast variety of different fabrics, some worked and some didn't. Throughout my journey of making bags, i have leanrt many new things for e.g, i learnt how to set up and use a sewing machine.

Characters:  The Matron

The book ''Boy'' written by the author ''Roald Dahl'' is a story about his life when he was younger. When Roald was just a boy his father had passed away and because of this his mother had fallin into a deep pit of depression and sadness. She was confused, lost and she was afraid for how her sons future would turn out without his father being there for him, she had to come up with a solution in order to ensure that he would have a good future so she came up with the idea of sending him to boarding school.

Kristalnacht

What is meant by the term Kristalnacht? The name Kristalnacht (Crytal Night) Refers to the shards of broken glass that littered the streets after the windows of Jewish stores, buildings and synagogues were smashed.

When did this even occur? It occured on the 9th of November 1938 - 10th of November 1938.

How many synagogues did the programme claim were burned? In just two day's, more then 1000 syangogues were burned or otherwise damaged.

How many Jews were claimed to have died as a result of this event? Rioters ransacked and looted about  7,500 Jewish buisness, killed at least 91 Jews, and vandalized Jewish hospitals, schools, homes and cemetires. The attackers were often neighbours. 

How many were said to have been sent to concentration camps? Between the 9th and 16th of November, some 30,000 Jewish males aged 16 to 60 were sent to the Buchenwald, Dachau, and Sachsenhausen concentration camps. Many were released within weeks; by 1939, 2000 remained in camps.

What was the reaction of the German people to this event? They blamed the jews for everything.

The Nuremberg

 

Provide two examples of how the new laws had affected the rights of German Jews. In 1935, the Nazi leaders had introduced new laws based on a heap of racial theories common in Nazi beliefs. The Neremberg laws had exluded German Jews from Reich citizenship and had made it forebidden for them to have any kind of relation ship with a ''German or German blood related person.'' Additional regulations to these laws deprived them from of most political rights. Jews were disenfranchised (meaning that they were banned from having the right to vote) and could not hold public office.

What other actions were taken that discriminated against Jews in Germany? (Remembering) The Nuremberg laws had changed the everyday lives of many Jews living in Germany by making Jews legally different from their non Jewish neighbours. In the years that followed, the Nazi had kept on making more and more anti-Jewish laws and decrees. These later laws relied on the definiton of ''Jew'' as defined in the Nuremberg laws. Examples of these other laws include things like The law on the alteration of family and personal names (Aug 1938), the Decree on passports of Jews (Oct 1938) and the police regulation on the marking of jews (sep 1941).

Why do you think that the Nazis passed these laws? (Understanding) I think that the Nazi's had set these new laws in place simply because they wanted the Jewish people to suffer.

If a New Zealand government passed a law that provided for different treatment of a named racial group in New Zealand, what do you think the reaction of most New Zealand people would be? Why do you think this might be the case? If our gouvernment were to add new laws based on racial discrimination against a certian group, i would personally think that it is nonsense/rubbish and i would be confused on why it would be set just because they are against those people but, how the whole of NZ would react. I definetly think that it would just be the start of a major agrument and i'm sure there would be a lot of protesting going on.

Do you think these Nuremberg laws were racist? Explain your point of view. (Evaluating) Yes, these laws were specifically set in place by the Nazi leaders because they were against Jewish people, it's not too hard to realize that the ''Nuremberg laws'' were created in order to make Jewish people suffer. I bileave that the reason they had disenfranchised the jews and deprived them from most of their political rights is because they were afraid of them climbing up the ranks and taking control.

 Dr Fauci aka Stephen Anothy, is an American physician/scientist and immunoligist working as the director of NIAID and the chief medical advisor to the president. 

DNA Extraction

                                             Aim: To extract the DNA from a kiwi fruit

                                                                           Method:

1. Scoop out the inner green stuff from the kiwi fruit into a ziplock bag with a splash of water and a teaspoon of salt.2. Strain the solution through a cloth into a beaker.

3. Add a squirt of dishwashing liquid and stir.

4. Pour into a test tube.

5. Place the test tube in a beaker filled with warm water.

6. Leave for 10mins. 

7. Slowly pour 5ml of methylatedspirits down the inside of the test tube.

Discussion:  

Where do you find the DNA? The DNA can be found in between the meth and the green slush.

What makes up DNA? DNA is made up of chemical building blocks called nucletides. These buldingh blocks are made up of three parts: a phostate group, a sugar group and one of four types of nitrogen bases.

How much DNA do humans shar with bananas? Humans share about 60% of their DNA with banana

      Did it work? Yes. I got to witness what the DNA of a kiwifruit looked like.

Hitlers anti sismetic quotes

From November the 8th to November the 9th, 1923, Adolf hitler, the leader of the Nazi party along with approximatley 2000 men attempted to sieze power by force from the Goverment in Bavaria, a state in southern Germany. Whilst the march was proceeding they were confronted by a police cordon, which resluted in the deaths of 16 Nazi party members and four police members. Just two day's after the march had begun it had already come to an end. Adolf hitler was arrested on November the 11th and was sentenced to five years in prison, Hitler was granted an early release and ended up only serving about nine months. While doing his time in prison, he had written a book called Mein kampf (My Struggle) in which he wrote about his thoughts on the future. The book showed just how much Hitler was against jews.

Here are some quotes that were contained within Hitlers book: ''The jewish youth lies and waits for hours on end, spying on the unsuspicious German girl he plans to seduce. He wants to contaminate her blood and remove her from the bosom of her own people. The jew hates the white race and wants to lower it's cultural level so that the jew might dominate''. ''The jews were responsible for bringing negros into the the rhineland with the crazy idea of bastardising (lowering the quality of) the white race which they hate and thus it's cultural and political level so that the jew might dominate''.

The Great depression

When did the Nazi party come into power? 1993 

Who was the leader of the Nazi party? Adolf Hitler

What was it? The Great Depression was the worst economic downfall in the history of the industiralized world, lasting from 1929 to 1939. It began after the stock market crash of October 1929, which sent wall street to panic and wiped out millions of investors. Over the next several years years, consumers spending and investment dropped, causing steep declines in industrial output and employement as failing companies laid off workers.

Why was Germany hit the hardest during the depression? Germany suffered more than any other nation as a result of the recall of US loans, which caused it’s economy to collapse. Unemployment rocketed, poverty soared and Germans became desperate.

What did Germany have to agree to by signing the treaty of versaille? They had to agree to the treaty because if they hadn't their country would have been taken over. Their submarines, military aircraft and artillery were all taken away and it reduced their navy to just 6 small battleships. They Were forced to give back all the land that they had stolen from the French and they also had to pay for the cost of the war. Their payment ended in 2010. 

 

How was NZ affected by the depression? In New zealand, the effects of the cash was not immediate. But from 1930 export prices began to drop, falling 45% by 1993. To a country overwhelmingly dependent on agricultural exports, this was devastating. By the end of 1930 urban business and manufacturing were feeling the flow of effects.

Reflection

For the past 2 terms, I have learnt a lot of new things throught out my journey whilst being a year 10. This term, i have struggled to keep up with my work in some of my classes for e.g wananga. We have been working on a unit standard assesment for the past couple of weeks, and let me tell you, it was hard for me, Personally because the work was was boring, but it was funny because when we were coming towards the end of the term, i felt like wanting to get stuck into the work and getting it done. I got stuck into the work and got a lot of it done, but there was no point because we needed to create 3 goals that could be done within 3 weeks, and we also needed evidence of our proggression so it was pretty much pointless. Next time if we do a unit standard again, i will be focusing and getting it done. 

Starfish poem

The starfish poem has a very deep and complex message because, it is about a man having a lack of faith and belief for the power of one. The poem goes like this, as a man was walking along the shore side he had noticed a boy picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean. Out of curiosity the man had walked up to the boy and had asked what he was doing. The boy replied i'm picking up and throwing starfish back into the ocean. The man replies whats the point its not like your gonna be able to help all the starfish back into the ocean and the boy says i Don't need to help all of them to make a difference, as long as i help one it makes a difference for that starfish. 

As you can tell this poem is all about having resilience and faith because the man was doubting the power of one. A wise man once said the waterfall only starts with one drop of water. 

The GPGP

 Pollution in the Eastern Pacific Ocean 

A man named Charles Moore had come across a large patch of trash within the Eastern part of the pacific ocean while sailing on his way home. The GPGP is an area of the Pacific ocean containing billions upon billions of plastic waste that has degraded over the years into tiny microplastics. The GPGP was formed because of pollution by humans and gyres. A gyre is a circular current in the ocean that occurs when the wind is blowing in the shape of a circle, because of this current it often pulls in trash.

The cause of all of this rubbish ending up in the pacific ocean is the wrongdoing of humans, by this I'm talking about people littering, fast food restaurants & supermarkets using plastic bags, straws, cups, lids etc etc. We know that us humans are the cause of all the plastic waste ending up in the Pacific Ocean because plastic was invented by mankind and it was also thrown around by (mankind), because the plastic is just sitting around doing nothing it gets pushed by the wind into the ocean killing and affecting our marine life and our environment.

The GPGP affects our environment & marine life because our marine species like seabirds, turtles and fish etc. They tend to mistake plastic in the ocean for food. Once they ingest the plastic, after a couple of days they start to feel sick and not too well and this is the part where they start to die of starvation and sickness and it's sad because knowing that these poor creatures that were just desperately looking for food died because of (our) actions is just sickening and this is why us humans (the problem) gotta clean up our act and start taking accountability for our actions.

Sustainable fishing

Is sustainable fishing even possible? 

How is commercial fishing a threat to dolphins and sea bird life? By catch in the fishing industry is when fish or other marine species is caught unintentionally while trying to catch one specific specie (tuna). Commercial fishing conducted within the coastline of French has a large impact on dolphins. The reason being is because dolphins play an important roll in keeping their environment balanced. They eat other animals - mainly fish and squid themselves are a source of food for some sharks and other creatures. without dolphins, the animals they pray on would increase in numbers, and their predators wouldn't have as much to eat.

The greatest showman

 The album ''this is me'' is a song featured in the popular film The greatest showmen. The reason i have chosen to blog about this song in particular is because it has great meaning and depth. As you can tell by the title, the song is all about people expressing their true inner selves by letting the world know that how they were born was who they were destined to be. ''The greatest showman'' is all about breaking the stereotype of discrimination towards people because of there appearance/race/belief. In the film a group of abnormal people come together to preform the greatest show of all time. I personally love the movie all though there was a lot of missing pieces that would have made the film a lot better but overall it is a great movie . Shark finning

What is it? Shark finning is the work done by humans where they cut the fins off of sharks then throw the bodies back into ocean.

Why is it a delicacy? Shark soup is a very common dish within the Asian community especially in Countries like China & Hong Kong. I'm not too sure as to why shark fins are so special/important to these countries because after all it doesn't have any taste and it has the consistency of noodles. However, i do bi believe i know the reason as to why it is such a delicacy to the people of the living within places like china and Hong Kong. It is believed that shark fins are good for your health and that it increases virility and that it may even give you longer life however, the fin is purely cartilage the same compound in human, cow and other vertebrates. Cartilage has no nutritional value. Any benefit would come from the broth and other ingredients added.

How is this impacting our oceans? Shark finning has a big impact on our oceans because as top predators  their disappearance will disrupt our entire oceans ecosystem so they're better off alive than dead. According to my personal circulations at the rate of which we are cutting shark fins and dumping their bodies back into the ocean they are more then likely to go extinct within 14 - 15 years, i came up with this estimation by dividing 73 million by 1 odd billion and it totaled to 14.
